Absolutely fantastic. This is my new favorite cafe. I mean, this is my new favorite place in the world. I'm not joking - I'd move in if they'd let me.
Here's my big problem with almost every other cafe serving decent coffee: they're so dark! And low and stuffy. I guess it's called "cozy", but I am not a cozy person.
Coffee Bar is sunny! Coffee Bar is airy! and Coffee Bar is big! Way tall ceilings, floor to ceiling windows on one whole wall, big square tables that could probably seat at least 20 people, long bars lined with bar chairs overlooking the counter, etc. etc. Oh, and the coffee has a big big flavor. Seriously, try the Clover coffee. Do it do it do it.
Of course they have wifi. And it becomes a wine bar at night. Now, I'm not a person that does "exciting' or "cool' things, or "goes out" at night. So to me, this is a cafe, where everyone else happens to be drinking wine, but there's plenty of room for me to sit in the corner on my laptop until late at night. How late? They close when everyone leaves. That late.
The employees are fantastic. The owner kept refilling my glass of water. As others have mentioned, they are really trying hard and care about their customers. They go around and ask everyone if they're done eating around 10:30 before they close the kitchen. If you're not done, they don't close the kitchen.
I love the minimalist look. So much. It always does me in. And I LIKE the artsy San Francisco pictures on the wall. I think they look cool. And the music is awesome. Good job on the atmosphere guys!
It's only a couple blocks from my apartment. Sure, that's where I sleep at night, but for all practical purposes, I now live at Florida & Mariposa.
!!!!!!!!!
Why? Because, when my dad moved from the middle of nowhere, Washington, to the great big town of Bellingham, Silver Beach Grocery store was about a block and a half away from our house.
A block and a half away! A store! That sells stuff! Not ten miles away, but a block and a half away! Oh, the wonders of city life!
Every night I would hope that we ran out of some crucial dinner time ingredient, like milk, so that we could run down to the store and buy some more. (The hope was not as strong as my unfulfilled desire that one night my dad would *forget* about dinner entirely, and we'd be forced to order pizza and have it delivered right to our door!)
Besides milk, shady magazines, and cigarettes, Silver Beach also had a reliable stock of Big Hunk candy bars, which besides being the best tasting candy bars (when microwaved for 18 seconds), also have the best name. I got one almost every day the summer I was 13, more because I was bored and that's the only activity I could afford than because of any merit of Big Hunks.
I was so enamored with Silver Beach that I told everyone I lived in the Silver Beach neighborhood (which is so small as to be practically non-existent and certainly unheard of) and I gave directions to my new city house from the Silver Beach grocery store, despite the fact that everyone I talked to would all be coming from the opposite direction.
Since then, I've grown less enamored of this neighborhood store, but it still holds a special place in my heart.
It's probably a lot better now that you can't smoke inside, but I haven't been there since then.

Chuckanut Brewery and Kitchen

The first time I heard of Chuckanut, I went here for dinner the next THREE nights in a row, I kid you not.
Night 1: They have cheese pie ($8.5). CHEESE PIE! Goat cheese pie with a pistachio crust to be specific. Soooo amazingly good and creamy, and served on top of a big yummy salad. I also got great carmelized onions on top of flatbread ($4) and a spicy yamburrito ($10)!
Night 2: Halibut special was amazing. ($18)
Night 3: Prawns, mussel special, and salmon. It wasn't the best seafood I've ever had, but the salmon had a great fruity sauce and was served with yams and vegetables. You also get a very generous portion of mussels.
The food is not fantastic, but it's pretty damn good, and very cheap for what you get. I love the atmosphere of this place most of all. It's cheery and decorated with Ben Mann paintings, my favorite painter - so bright for Bellingham! It's also a rare restaurant with outdoor seating and a view of the bay.
Awesome seafood, awesome desserts, my 2 favorite things to eat.
Alder planked salmon is what I always get, but the half and half (salmon and halibut) is super good too. Oh, and coconut prawns for an appetizer!

Cruisin Coffee Airport

We always stop here before we fly out of the Bellingham airport, and have to gulp our coffee down before we go through security. The coffee's worth it, but I'd still recommend getting a small coffee.
On the other hand, our family has spent almost the last 100 years looking for an excuse to be out on Chuckanut Drive so we can drop in on Taylor's, buy some raw oysters, and gulp them down on their windy picnic benches on Chuckanut Bay. (See here for details: http://flickr.com/phot... )
Maia's favorite way to eat oysters: Taylor's small pacific oysters, eaten raw
Maia's favorite way to cook oysters: Taylor's, barbecued over a campfire on the half shell with a little bit of garlic and parmesan melted on top
Now, if you haven't figured this out yet, Maia loves all things that come from the sea. This love usually manifests itself as me eating fish and things. However, Taylor's gives me another outlet, which is why they're my favorite jewelry store too. They sell black pearl necklaces, which I longingly look at through the dingy plastic display case, with the taste of lemon and oysters in my mouth. One day I'll buy a necklace with a black pearl; they're far prettier than any gem. Until then, I'll stick to just buying the oysters.
This means that, despite the fact that I grew up in Bellingham, a town about as far away from the south as you can get, I'm pretty familiar with the delicacies of southern food.
And Bayou does them all well, and with style. Last night at dinner, the cutest, friendliest waitress served us up an incredible dinner. I got the mac and cheese, portabello ravioli and the iced tea with sugar/mint syrup. It was all so good - I also highly recommend the super dark Louisiana beer.
I love that their menu is full of seafood and that they list the local sources for a lot of their food (Mallard's ice cream?! Taylor's oysters!?).
All in all, if something had to replace Stewart's coffee house, I'm glad it's Bayou. Somehow, it still has that coffeehouse vibe to me.
